This Week: Beginning a “Big Weekend”

WCWP’s annual Homecoming Weekend will begin on the station’s 51st anniversary Thursday night with special preview editions of The Rock Show and The Grooveyard.  Hosting The Rock Show from 7-9 PM, Bobby G will celebrate his birthday and feature music from this week in 1963.  Alan Seltzer continues the party on The Grooveyard starting at 9 PM with music for both Bobby’s birthday and the station’s anniversary,  The Top Ten @ 10 will feature the survey for October 18, 1958.  The Thursday night editions of both The Rock Show and The Grooveyard will be underwritten by St Francis Preparatory School and CRC Crump Insurance.

Beginning Friday night at 7 PM, station alumni return to the station to bring back their original shows.  A total of 21 alumni representing all eras of WCWP history will be hosting programs during the weekend, starting with Grooveyard host Alan Seltzer.  Among the highlights will be the announcement of the 2013 inductees to the WCWP Hall of Fame Saturday at 5 PM.  The weekend continues until Sunday night at 10 PM.  A complete schedule is available here.

Meantime, voting continues for your favorite songs in the “Grooveyard Greats” surveys.  Voting for the best songs of 1962 will close in Thursday, while the survey for your favorites from 1959 will continue all week.  At the time of this post, both surveys were unusually close, with several sons within a few votes of first place.  A new poll, for the best of 1958, will begin on Thursday. You can choose up to 10 favorite songs for each year.  For links, results and a full schedule, check out our Grooveyard Greats page.

Both “The Grooveyard” and “The Rock Show” can be heard on 88.1 FM on Long Island, the 88.1 FM link on or the TuneIn app on your SmartPhone.  Feel free to send song requests, non-political rants, comments and suggestions below.
