On November 11, 1958, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters recorded the original version of “The Twist”. The song was released by King records as the B-side to “Teardrops on Your Letter”, a #4 song on the R&B charts in 1960. “The Twist” would have faded into oblivion if Chubby Checker never recorded a cover version, which went to #1 twice. Since the video for the song itself doesn’t offer much visually, here’s an interview with Hank Ballard.
