On this date in 1958, Sun Records founder and head Sam Phillips took out a full-page ad in Billboard Magazine so Jerry Lee Lewis could explain his actions following the singer’s marriage to his 14-year old second cousin. The ad did nothing to stop the controversy. He was still popular in the U.K., as shown in this 1964 special on Granada television.
