While many people remember Palisades Amusement Park because of the song and unforgettable commercial, the playground of my childhood was Fairyland Amusement Park in Elmhurst, Queens. This week’s featured video is actually home movies–not mine–taken at the park in 1963 and 1966. A personal note: The apartment building where I grew up is visible from the ferris wheel at 0:25 of the video.
This memory is timely due to an article in last week’s Forest Hills Times on Fairyland, which was at the location of the current Queens Center shopping mall. While being interviewed for the article, I recalled hearing this song being played from across the athletic field whenever jugglers or magicians appeared on the stage. . .
