On this week’s edition of “The Grooveyard”, host Alan Seltzer previews the beginning of a special Homecoming Weekend celebrating the 50th anniversary of WCWP Radio on 88.1 FM. While the station went on the air in March 1965, the celebration will take part during the station’s annual Homecoming Weekend.
“The Grooveyard” continues it’s tradition of previewing the celebration by featuring a Top Ten @ 10 for October 8, 1961, the year WCWP first went on the air as a carrier current station heard only on the LIU Post campus. Music by The Drifters will also be featured on would have been bass singer’s Doc Green’s 79th birthday.
The on-air parties officially begin Friday at noon when the station offers it’s annual Homecoming Weekend, when alumni return to the station to bring back their original shows. Grooveyard host Alan Seltzer returns to feature “Seltzer with a Twist” Friday at 6 PM. Saturday Soiree hosts Scott Perschke and Bobby G will join the festivities Friday at 8 PM and Saturday at 7 PM respectively. The special weekend continues through Sunday at midnight. (“Saturday Soiree” will be pre-empted this week, but returns next Saturday, October 17.)
Voting is also taking place in the Grooveyard Great 88 survey. Voting closes at the end of “The Grooveyard” Thursday on the survey for your favorite songs of 1960. Surveys are also now open for your 10 favorite songs of 1956 and 1961. Details and a first-round schedule are available here.
