By popular request, our recent tribute to Murry the K will be rebroadcast on “The Grooveyard” Saturday night. Host Alan Seltzer will take us to the Submarine Races, sharing rare clips from Murray the K’s radio shows, plus play music from many of the artists who appeared at his shows at the Brooklyn Fox, Brooklyn Paramount and other locations.
The show comes a week after what would be Murray’s 95th birthday, and a few days before the 35th anniversary of his death. He made radio history with innovative segues, jingles, sound effects and other routines. The show led to a successful series of concerts at the Brooklyn Fox theatre. That was a showcase for new talent, including Bobby Darin, Dionne Warwick and other performers. Murray the K co-wrote “Splish Splash with Darin. His association with the Ronettes, who were Murray’s “Dancing Girls” led to him befriending a British group touring the United States for the first time in 1964, and becoming known as “The Fifth Beatle”. More information on Murray the K is available on a website developed by his son, Peter Altschuler.
We’ll also offer the Grooveyard Top Ten from February 20, 1957 and interesting versions of songs by Little Richard in our “Under the Covers” segment.
Listen to “The Grooveyard” following “Rick’s Redneck Ranch” each Saturday night at 7 PM on 88.1 FM on Long Island or by clicking the 88.1 FM link on wcwp.org or via the TuneIn app. You can also follow us on Twitter.
