1959 – The Results

The Great 88 survey for the best songs of 1959 set a new record for the number of songs returning to the Top Five from the previous year.  Four of the five top songs in the survey were the same as in 2016, with songs by Jackie Wilson and Dion and the Belmonts among the most popular four years in a row.  The only new song among the top hits was by the Elegants.

Here’s the top five songs from 1959 alphabetically by artist:

“The Angels Listened In” by the Crests

“A Teenager in Love” by Dion and the Belmonts

“You Were Mine” by The Fireflies

“Sea of Love” by Phil Phillips

“Lonely Teardrops” by Jackie Wilson

This was the last of our first-round surveys in the sixth annual Great 88 listener poll.  The polls in the final round for 2017 will be posted on Thanksgiving Day.   Check out the first round results here, and get updates on Twitter.
