1961 – The Results

Like the 2018 Great 88 first round survey, there was a very tight race for the top positions, with a significant drop after the top rated songs.  A total of six songs were within 2% of the top position, with another four within 3%.  Two traditional favorites–The Shirelles (Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow) and Del Shannon (Runaway) just missed the top positions after two and six consecutive years there respectively. Dion, Gene McDaniels and Rosie and the Originals all return to the top five positions, the first two for the third consecutive year.

Here’s the top five songs in alphabetical order by artist:

“Quarter to Three” by Gary U.S. Bonds

“Runaround Sue” by Dion

“My True Story” by The Jive Five

“A Hundred Pounds of Clay” by Gene McDaniels

“Angel Baby” by Rosie and the Originals
