Tributes to two of the most popular disc jockeys in New York radio history and a great artist from the Grooveyard era will be featured by Alan Seltzer on “Best of The Grooveyard” Saturday night at 7 PM.
We’ll begin with a tribute to Murray the K from February, 2016. The hour includes rare clips from Murray the K’s radio shows, plus music from many of the artists who appeared at his shows at the Brooklyn Fox, Brooklyn Paramount and other locations and other private recordings, many provided by Murray’s estate. We’ll continue with a Grooveyard Top Ten from February 20, 1957 and an Under the Covers segment featuring Little Richard.
For the Grooveyard Party Hour, we’ll switch to a show from this February offering a tribute to Harry Harrison, who passed away the previous week. The “Morning Mayor”, who had a radio career exceeding 50 years, is the only DJ to be a WMCA Good Guy, a WABC All American and part of the legendary WCBS-FM lineup when it was an oldies station.
Meanwhile, The Grooveyard will return with prerecorded shows on Saturday, May 9. While telephone requests are not possible, listeners can post requests online by the Monday prior to the show. You can also send an email to alan@wcwpgrooveyard.com.
Listen to “The Grooveyard” following “Rick’s Redneck Ranch” each Saturday night at 7 PM on 88.1 FM on Long Island or by clicking the 88.1 FM link on wcwp.org, via the TuneIn app. or the WCWP app on your iPhone or Android device.
