Voting for the best songs of 1956 has traditionally been a battle of long-time favorites, and the 10th annual vote is no exception. All the songs in the Top Five reached that mark at least three times. Among those with the fewest times in the Top Five, Guy Mitchell was the only artist to repeat from 2020, and Chuck Berry’s hit is on this list for the first time since 2014. Shirley and Lee’s and Elvis Presley’s songs each made the Top Five four times, with Elvis battling himself several years. “Don’t Be Cruel” and other hits edged out “Hound Dog” for the higher positions a few other years. The final song, by the Five Satins, has made the Top Five eight out of 10 years, missing last year by only one vote.
