1955 and Earlier – The Results

The ninth annual survey for the best songs of 1955 and earlier was a mix of the familiar and the unfamiliar.  Like most other surveys completed this year, the survey offered a record number of votes.  Unlike other the other 2020 polls, there were five clear-cut favorites, with a drop in the number of votes after that.  There were also familiar favorites in the Top Five, with The Penguins reaching the upper ranks for the eighth straight year and Fats Domino coming back to the top hits for the fourth time in five years.  There were also newcomers, with a first-time Elvis Presley hit and Laverne Baker potentially reaching the Great 88 for the first time ever.

Here’s the top five songs from 1955 and earlier alphabetically by artist:

“Tweedlee Dee” by LaVern Baker

“Ain’t That a Shame” by Fats Domino

“Shake Rattle and Roll” by Bill Haley and His Comets (1954)

“Earth Angel” by The Penguins

“That’s All Right” by Elvis Presley
