The first round contest for the top songs of 1962 was filled with upsets, with only one song repeating from 2019 and a song that never appeared on the final Great 88 survey reaching the Top Five. Gene Chandler had one of the top songs for a second year, while The Contours–a potential first-time Great 88 artist–and The Majors were both first-time Top Five artists.
