The Great 88 survey for 1956 hits is traditionally one of the closest races, and the fifth annual survey was no exception. A total of 20 songs were within 4% of the top position. Traditional popular artists dominated, with Elvis Presley and Fats Domino holding five of the top ten songs. Both repeated in the top five, but with different songs from 2015. Last year’s #1 song, “In the Still of the Night” reached the top five for the fourth consecutive year.
Here’s the top five songs from 1956 alphabetically by artist:
“Blueberry Hill” by Fats Domino
“In the Still of the Night” by Five Satins
“Singing the Blues” by Guy Mitchell
“Don’t Be Cruel” by Elvis Presley
“Blue Suede Shoes” by Elvis Presley
