The Great 88 survey for hits from 1955 and earlier has two traditional characteristics, and this year’s poll is no different. Like past years, the results were very close, with a dozen songs within 3% of the lead. At the same time, there was a lot of diversity, with 67 different songs from that time period getting some support. There were two repeat songs in the top five from previous years. The Penguins returned for the fifth consecutive year–setting a Great 88 record–and Fats Domino was back in the top five for a second time.
